Wow has life been busy since Jason and I moved to Cape Cod!
I’ve been meaning to write a post to share a little bit about my job up here since I started last week and I just haven’t even been able to find the time to!
As I mentioned in a previous post, this summer Jason and I really felt like we needed a change. We’ve been ready to leave New York for awhile and while sitting on the beach on Cape Cod this summer we decided if one of us could find a job up here by the end of the summer we’d stay!
Well, I don’t think either of us really thought there was a chance of that happening, but within 4 days of that conversation I was offered a job!
So, what is this job??
Well yesterday I found an old description they had posted of the job where they described what they were looking for as “the best combination wedding planner/ beach party host/ triathlete” (seriously, who wouldn’t want that job, right?!?).
Well, apparently wedding planner/ beach party host/ triathlete = Event Manager at the Buzzards Bay Coalition!
The Buzzards Bay Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring clean water and the restoration and protection of Buzzards Bay, an estuary located in Southeastern Massachusetts.
My job specifically is to produce their major fundraising events:
- a 1.2 mile open water swim across the Bay
- a 75-mile bike ride around the watershed area
- a golf outing
- and a yet to be determined new endurance event!
So, pretty much right up my alley!
Our office is in an amazingly restored old building in the historic New Bedford whaling district…
…is surrounded by adorable cobblestone streets and beautiful old buildings with amazing stories…
…and we’re right across from the harbor!
Since I’m not all that familiar with the Bay and the Coalition’s mission, I’ve been taking the opportunity to take some little field trips to familiarize myself with some of our conservation land…
…and some of the uses of the Bay itself – like quahogging!
I’m quickly learning that the Coalition is doing some amazing work and I’m excited to learn more about everything the education, conservation and advocacy branches of the organization are working on!
I know some of you may be thinking, “wait, wasn’t Danielle going back to school??”
Yup. I had been taking pre-requisite classes towards eventually applying to a Doctorate of Physical Therapy program and while that plan isn’t completely off the table, I decided Jason and I moving out a New York to someplace we’d be happier really was the priority. I plan on taking a class a semester still and we’ll see how it goes!
Maybe I’ll really love this job and realize that I’m happy doing event management.
Maybe I’ll keep working on the pre-reqs and when I’m done with them I’ll still apply to PT programs.
I really have no idea how it’ll turn out, but I know we’re happy to be living on Cape Cod and that’s what matters right now!
So, how many readers do I have that are open water swimmers and cyclists that I can convince to take a trip out to Cape Cod for one of my events?!?
