2013 Goals & Growth Check-In

Happy April!

I don’t know about where you live, but around here it’s finally starting to feel a bit like spring and I’m planning on taking advantage of the great running weather before the heat and humidity move in!

Since I set some goals for myself at the start of the year, I thought it would be a good idea to check in on them every few months just to see where I am and make sure nothing’s getting neglected – so, here’s where I stand today with each of my 2013 goals!

2013 Goals & Growth

Run a Non-Disney Marathon

I’m registered for the Marine Corp Marathon in October!  I’m interested in seeing my marathon time after doing speed work through the summer and not stopping to take pictures with characters!

Start Doing Speed Work

When I wrote this goal what I really meant was “break 2 hours in a half marathon”, but I figured speed work was how I was going to get there so I made the speed work my actual goal.  Well, it looks like I peaked too soon because MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

This goal stays on my list though because more speed work can only make me faster!  Maybe another PR attempt this fall in Disneyland??!

Run 800 Miles

As of yesterday I am at 188 miles for 2013 so far which means I have to average 68 miles a month for the rest of the year to reach my goal.  Definitely do-able since I’ll be training for Dumbo, Marine Corp and Dopey!  (I’m actually hoping to average more like 80-100 miles per month.)

2013 RunKeeper Data

Yoga

My goal here was just to keep up with my regular yoga practice after finishing teacher training.  I’ve been practicing 2-3 days a week, so doing well here!  (Seeing how much yoga helps my running definitely motivates me to keep it up!)

Triathlon

Ummm….yeah.  I have yet to swim or bike.  This is probably my biggest reach goal for this year, but I do have my eye on a couple of sprint triathlons up on Cape Cod this summer, so we’ll see if this one happens.

The 5 Year Plan

Classes are going well so far and I’ve started my PT observation hours, so headed in the right direction!  I do really need to get started studying for the GRE’s though!

Overall not a bad start, I’ll check in again in another few months!

Do you have any long term goals you are working on this year??

  1. Congrats on hitting your goals so far and that PR! You’ll find that speedwork will make a HUGE difference. You’re going to be dropping time like crazy. It’s really fun! I too have committed to a summer triathlon, and have yet to swim! I started biking, but barely. We can do this!

    • Thanks Karla! I’m actually more nervous about the biking than the swimming! I feel like I just don’t know where to go around me to bike (I’m too nervous to bike on the roads until I get more comfortable!). Good luck with your training too!

  2. Seriously- not complaining, but I get sick for a week and now it’s Spring! I have no idea how to dress.

Congrats on maintaining your goals so far! I hear MCM is awesome.

  3. Congrats on making it in to the MCM!! Great job on your goals. I took last year off of triathlons (I haven’t progressed past the sprint distance) and I want to do one this year but I’m having a hard time even thinking about getting into a pool!

    • I’m more nervous about the biking! Also, I only have a hybrid bike right now and I’m hesitant to spend the $ on a road bike if I’m not sure I’m going to love doing triathlons yet!

  4. Congrats again on the sub 2 hour finish!! As a slower runner, I’m working on getting faster, too – I’m hoping that I will be able to run a 5k in under 34:30. Good luck with progress throughout the year!

    • The great thing about running is that honestly at our level (i.e. not elite!) is that it doesn’t really matter how fast or slow we are because we’re not really competing against anyone but ourselves, I mean we’re obviously not out to win the race! (Funny that we get exciting about PR’s, which is really just beating ourselves!).

  5. Congrats on your goals so far! Also something you may want to consider (not that you need any more goals lol) is a biatholon. I was looking into it since I am NOT a strong swimmer.

Good luck with the remaining goals you have! I have no doubt you will be a success! 🙂
