I know it’s been over a month and a half since the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon, but I wrote this recap shortly after I got back hoping I would get around to starting a blog to post it on!  I was really inspired by some of the blogging/ social media community I met down at the race and knew that I wanted to be a part of it, so (almost two months late!) here is my recap of my first ever race:

My trip down to Florida didn’t go quite as smoothly as I had hoped.  I left work right around 4pm to head to JFK for my 6pm flight – I jumped on the train and figured it would take me about a half an hour to get there and I’d have plenty of the time to grab something to eat quickly.  I was so excited about this race I could barely contain myself, this was something I had been working towards for months and it was almost here!  And then CRACK and the train slowed to a stop…and we sat…and we sat…and we sat.  I kept hoping there was still a chance I would make my flight until about 45 minutes later when finally a train conductor walked through the car and said chances are we would’t be going anywhere for awhile – apparently lightning had hit the transformer.

It was Thursday night and the race wasn’t until Saturday night, so I wouldn’t have cared if I didn’t make it down that night, except I had been chosen through a Facebook contest to participate in a special runDisney Meet Up early Friday morning and I really didn’t want to miss it!  I started working the phones and was able to switch to a later flight, but there was still no guarantee the train was going to start moving in time to make that one either.  Well, about an hour and a half after the train stopped we started moving again and I was at the airport on time for my later flight…which got delayed…and delayed…and delayed, until we finally left at about 10pm.  So, I ended up landing in Florida around midnight and I had to be up for the Meet Up at 5am the next morning!

But, there is a silver lining to being delayed!  When I got on the Magical Express bus to go over to my hotel I saw Jenn of EatSleepRunDisney!  I had e-mailed with her a few times before the W&D weekend and she had mentioned if I saw her to come over and saw hello, I definitely wasn’t expecting to see her so early, but it was great to meet her and chat on the ride over to the Disney properties!

I finally got to Old Key West and got a few hours sleep before the Meet Up (I’ll post a separate recap on that!).  After that I spent some time at the Race Expo (where I got a long sleeve t-shirt and a W&D Half Marathon wine glass) before I headed back to the room for a quick nap.

I met up with my parents and sister at Epcot that night for dinner at Chef’s de France where we were lucky enough to run into one of my favorite Disney characters, Remy from Ratatoullie!  I went back to the room and got in bed pretty early that night – even though the race wasn’t until the next night I wanted to be well rested!

My sister Christina and I at Epcot!

I spend the morning of the race taking it easy at Hollywood Studios with my family and we had a late lunch at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe (a can’t miss whenever I’m at Disney!) where we actually had a server who stayed in character the entire time – it’s been awhile since that’s happened, I had been disappointed with our servers the past few times I had been there.  The only time he did slip out a character a bit was when my mom mentioned I was there for the Half Marathon, he got all excited and said he had run the full marathon the previous January and started giving me all sorts of tips!  He was great – hope to have him again on another visit!

It was a short day for me and I went back to the room right after lunch to nap.  I was definitely nervous but I felt like I was well prepared – I had all my stuff laid out ready for when it was time to go!  I got up around 5pm, showered, stretched a bit, had a snack, got all of my race stuff ready and I was out the door to catch the bus to the race start at the ESPN Wide World of Sports!

To be continued…

P.S. – I apologize for the lack of pictures but at the time I didn’t know I would be blogging about any of this, I’ll make sure to have plenty moving forward!

    • Hi there! I’m pretty sure I saw that 2012 Disney Wine & Dine Half will be the weekend of September 28th & 29th – I definitely recommend it! I had a really great time.

  1. Ahhh…the joy of flight delays out of JFK and EWR! 🙂 But it’s true, at least we got to meet! I was SO freakin frustrated by the time I saw you but chatting definitely helped ease the annoyance. Plus…we were FINALLY at Disney! (wow ok…used way too many exclamation marks in that whole comment)

    • I’m so glad I ran in to you on the bus, I definitely don’t think my race weekend experience would have been the same if I hadn’t met you and Lisa and everyone! Can’t wait until January!
