Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run: The Plan

Happy Monday All!

So, this weekend I’ll be heading down to Washington DC for the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run!

I’m actually really excited, I’ve been wanting to go back to DC since I ran the Marine Corps Marathon last fall.  When I was down for Marine Corps there was so much I wanted to do, but I was concerned with overdoing the walking in the days leading up to the marathon.

This time, since I’m not too worried about having to “save” my legs for a 10 miler, I’m going all out commando tourist, guidebook and all!

DC Guide Book

First, let me introduce you to the cast of characters for the weekend, my travel/ running partners in crime – Daniel and Pat!  (Both familiar faces if you’ve been around these parts for awhile.)

Full Gravediggers

Yup, these guys who couldn’t figure out how to play dead.

Daniel and I will be driving down on Friday and Pat is flying and meeting us there Friday night.

Dan and I plan on hitting up the expo when we arrive and then we’re heading out for an evening bike tour of the National Mall and Tidal Basin!

Saturday morning the boys are planning on going to the zoo while I go to a Cherry Blossom Yoga class held outside near the Washington Monument!  (Hoping Nicole decides to join me!)

I’ll meet back up with the guys in the afternoon and we’ll cram take in a few museums before we head to dinner and then a take a tour that walks in the footsteps of the night Lincoln was assassinated!

Sunday is race day!  After the run we’ll shower and go to brunch and then try to either get to another museum or two or visit the botanical gardens before we head home.

Whew…I’m tired just thinking about getting all that into one weekend!

Fingers crossed the weather cooperates! (It’s not looking too bad right now…)

DC Weather

And Nicole, who lives in DC has been on Cherry Blossom watch for me, so hopefully they’ll be well on their way to blossoming while we’re there!  (P.S. – Nicole’s been writing some fun Cherry Blossom countdown posts if you want to check them out!)

Anyone else running Cherry Blossom this year?

Any DC sites you’d add to my plan??

    • Yes, it’s such a great place for a race trip! It was hard for MCM though since I didn’t want to do too much walking…I’d suggest saving the sightseeing for AFTER the race if you do a full marathon down there!

  1. I would LOVE to run this race! I ran the Army Ten-Miler last fall with one of my best friends who lives in the area–she ran the Cherry Blossom last year and it sounds so great. From what I hear, the trees should be perfect for this coming weekend. SO jealous! Have a great race!

  2. I’m now super duper excited and I will indeed do yoga this weekend!!! I hope with the warmer weather this week we actually get some cherry blossoms…

  3. I’m tired just reading about all your plans. Last time I was in DC was for a conference and I didn’t have any time to do the tourist stuff 😦

    • Oh also – you should go to the Holocaust Museum, the Newseum, and Air and Space. There is a lot to do! I’ll just be there for a night with my friend – Saturday night massage and the run Sunday followed by brunch!

    • Nicole’s last report said there were buds on the trees so hopefully we’ll have some blossoms by this weekend!

I’ve been to the Holocaust Museum so we’ll probably skip that this trip, but I really do want to see the Newseum! And the boys have already put Air & Space on our “to-do” list : )

  4. I’m so jealous! This is always on my bucket list but I never manage to remember to enter the lottery! Have tons of fun! Take tons of pictures! And figures crossed on the weather and the beautiful cherry blossoms for you! 🙂

  5. I ran this race a couple of years ago and it was great! I really want to visit the zoo the next time I get down there. Your weekend sounds like tons of fun!

  6. Sounds fun! I hope you get the blossoms! When I did the race, they were past their peak and only a few trees had them. But the ENTIRE course is lined with cherry trees, so it will be GORGEOUS if they are blooming!
